What Does a Dust Shroud Do?

A dust shroud encloses the wheel, blade or bit and puts a vacuum port right at the point of contact, so concrete dust, mortar and paint chips leave through a hose instead of into the room. That is the whole difference between a shroud and a shop vac parked nearby. Capture happens at the cut, before the dust is airborne and everyone downwind is breathing it. On dry concrete the shroud is only half the control. Table 1 of the OSHA respirable crystalline silica standard pairs each tool with a dust collector at a stated airflow and filtration, so a shroud with an underrated vacuum behind it does not satisfy the pairing. Cutting and grinding silica-bearing material without capture is the exposure route NIOSH exposure research keeps coming back to.

Which Dust Shroud Fits Your Tool?

Start with the tool, then the wheel size. Grinders take a DustBuddie in 5" or 7", with the XP version in glass-filled nylon when a composite shroud is not surviving the work and the single-use Dustie when it is a one-job proposition. Crack chasing and tuckpointing use the CutBuddie, sized 5", 6" and 7", because a cutting shroud needs an adjustable shoe and a sight line the grinding shrouds do not have. Drilling runs the BitBuddie, 1-3/8" for anchor holes and 4" for coring. Beyond that the range covers reciprocating saws, worm-drive and gas cut-off saws, demo hammers, and scraping paint or popcorn ceilings with the ChipBuddie. Prices run from about thirty dollars for a single-use shroud to just over four hundred for a gas cut-off saw system.

How Does a Dust Shroud Attach to a Vacuum?

Most shrouds here ship with an 18-inch adapter hose that drops onto a standard 1.25", 1.5" or 2.25" vacuum port, so the connection is usually a push fit with no adapter kit involved. The shroud itself clamps to the grinder neck with a band clamp or mounting kit sized to the tool guard, which is the measurement worth checking before ordering, since guard diameters vary between brands more than wheel sizes do. Match the vacuum to the tool as well as the port. A 5-gallon shop vac will pull dust off a 4-inch grinder and stall on a 7-inch cup wheel, which is why the HEPA wet/dry units are the usual pairing on silica work.

What is a grinding dust shroud?
It is a housing that fits over an angle grinder's cup wheel and seals against the work surface, with a port that connects to a vacuum. The dust the wheel generates is pulled into the hose at the point of grinding instead of escaping into the air.
Do I need a dust shroud for an angle grinder?

Are dust shrouds reusable?
The DustBuddie, CutBuddie and XP models are built for repeat use, with the XP in glass-filled nylon for the roughest work. The Dustie is a lower-cost ABS shroud meant for occasional or single-job use.

Brio Air Filtration = Game Changer

Located in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, we acquired our Brio Air Filter in mid-late Spring of this year (2023) when pollen count was high and we were beginning to experience the effects of Poor Air Quality Index as a result of smoke particulates from fires in Canada that caused the air in much of Minnesota to become hazy and simply dirty.

It is so easy to share our experience with the Brio Air Filter given how quickly and efficiently it removed pollen, dust, and smoke particles from the environment inside our home. Two people in our home who suffer from pollen-related allergies during the spring immediately experienced easier breathing and elimination of symptoms within the house. With respect to smoke particulates from Canada drifting into our environment, EVERYONE in our home experienced directly improved breathing and smell of the air when entering from outside.

An additional piece of information to account for is that we have always employed high grade furnace filters in our home’s central HVAC system. With that high grade filtration in place both prior to and after acquiring a Brio home air filter, we all quickly agreed that deploying the Brio in our home made an easily noticeable positive difference in breathing inside our home. Additionally, those of us who clean our home have observed that dust builds up slower on our floors and furniture than before we deployed the Brio unit.

We did note that the Brio is not as quiet as a few other brands/models on the market that we have tried in our home but the efficiency and quality of the filtration, along with the air turnover rate it provides,allows us to locate the Brio unit in central rooms away from the bedrooms. Since we made that change there has been no noise-related effect on our sleep, while the unit maintains the same level of air cleanliness throughout our home.

A last key point to make is how easy the Brio unit is to maintain. The simplicity of the modular construction of the Brio unit makes it very quick and easy to keep the filtration sections clean. We have not yet reached a point of filter replacement but it is obvious to us that the replacement will take a matter of seconds and can be executed by anyone in our home, including our 10-year-old son.
