Auto Defrost Dehumidifiers
What Does Auto Defrost Do in a Cool Space?
Auto defrost dehumidifiers automatically clear ice from the refrigerant coil in cool basements, crawl spaces, garages and unheated job sites. Moisture can freeze on the cold coil when the surrounding air is cool. The system detects these conditions and clears the ice so drying can resume without you switching the unit off.
Frost can still form on a unit with automatic defrost. The system removes it, but the unit must stay within its stated operating temperature range. Choose a model rated for the coldest conditions your space will reach. Low-temperature limits vary by model.
For humidity targets, EPA guidance on mold and moisture advises keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent.
Which Defrost System and Temperature Limit Fit Your Space?
Hot-gas defrost sends warm refrigerant gas through the coil to clear ice. The Ebac RM85 uses thermostatically controlled hot-gas defrost and operates at 37°F without stopping the drying cycle. It has 70 PPD capacity, runs on 115V and has a rotomolded housing. The Ebac Kompact also uses hot-gas defrost. Its stated minimum is 33°F, with 56 PPD capacity and a built-in pump.
Reverse-cycle defrost reverses the refrigerant flow. The Ebac Orion uses this system and has a stated 33°F minimum. It is a two-stage, 105 PPD unit with 115V power and a built-in GFI plug.
The term "automatic defrost" does not tell you whether a unit uses hot-gas or reverse-cycle defrost. The Abatement Technologies AQUATRAP AT250RS is an LGR unit with sensor-controlled defrost and an operating range of 34°F to 100°F. Desiccant dehumidifiers have no refrigerant coil and do not need a defrost cycle.
When comparing auto defrost dehumidifiers, check each model's stated minimum temperature. A unit rated for 37°F does not have the same operating limit as one rated for 33°F.

How Should You Match Capacity, Drainage and Power?
Once you have checked the temperature limit, compare moisture-removal ratings. The AQUATRAP AT250RS is rated at 147 PPD AHAM, moves 400 CFM and uses 115V power. Keep the AHAM designation in mind when comparing its rating with other listed capacities.
Check the drainage setup and available power, too. If you need a built-in pump, the Kompact includes one and lists 880W power consumption. These are freestanding units. Choose one with the capacity to handle the space's moisture load, and check that its electrical requirements and drainage arrangement suit your setup.

Brio Air Filtration = Game Changer
Located in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, we acquired our Brio Air Filter in mid-late Spring of this year (2023) when pollen count was high and we were beginning to experience the effects of Poor Air Quality Index as a result of smoke particulates from fires in Canada that caused the air in much of Minnesota to become hazy and simply dirty.
It is so easy to share our experience with the Brio Air Filter given how quickly and efficiently it removed pollen, dust, and smoke particles from the environment inside our home. Two people in our home who suffer from pollen-related allergies during the spring immediately experienced easier breathing and elimination of symptoms within the house. With respect to smoke particulates from Canada drifting into our environment, EVERYONE in our home experienced directly improved breathing and smell of the air when entering from outside.
An additional piece of information to account for is that we have always employed high grade furnace filters in our home’s central HVAC system. With that high grade filtration in place both prior to and after acquiring a Brio home air filter, we all quickly agreed that deploying the Brio in our home made an easily noticeable positive difference in breathing inside our home. Additionally, those of us who clean our home have observed that dust builds up slower on our floors and furniture than before we deployed the Brio unit.
We did note that the Brio is not as quiet as a few other brands/models on the market that we have tried in our home but the efficiency and quality of the filtration, along with the air turnover rate it provides,allows us to locate the Brio unit in central rooms away from the bedrooms. Since we made that change there has been no noise-related effect on our sleep, while the unit maintains the same level of air cleanliness throughout our home.
A last key point to make is how easy the Brio unit is to maintain. The simplicity of the modular construction of the Brio unit makes it very quick and easy to keep the filtration sections clean. We have not yet reached a point of filter replacement but it is obvious to us that the replacement will take a matter of seconds and can be executed by anyone in our home, including our 10-year-old son.
