Whole House Dehumidifiers for Ducted, Whole-Building Humidity Control
What makes a dehumidifier a whole house unit?
A whole house dehumidifier connects to the building's duct system, so dried air reaches every room the air handler already serves. A portable dries the room it stands in and leaves the rest of the house at whatever humidity it was.
Two things follow from that. The equipment sits in a mechanical room, basement, or crawl space instead of taking up floor area somewhere finished, and humidity holds at one setpoint across the structure rather than in pockets around wherever a portable happens to be plugged in. Maintenance gets simpler too: one filter, one drain. The EPA puts the target band for indoor relative humidity at 30 to 50 percent, and below 60 percent in all cases.
How to size a whole house dehumidifier
Size on the building's moisture load and the air handler's airflow, not the room count. Match the unit's rated CFM to the duct system it is joining, then pick capacity from the load.
The Ebac range here runs from 24 to 150 pints per day. The CD30-S and CD30-SE (24 PPD) suit small zoned ductwork. The CD60, CD85, and CD100 cover 60 to 90 PPD, which handles most full-home ducted installs. The K100E and K100H (97 PPD, 700 CFM) and the CD200 (138 PPD, 664 CFM) are built for higher-airflow systems, with WiFi monitoring on the K100E. The PD120 (110 PPD, 261 CFM) and PD150-D (145 PPD) take heavier commercial loads. The RM4500 and RM4500-H reach 150 PPD, the second with WiFi and smartphone monitoring. Every unit here is ducted; the WM80 and WM150-D are the wall-mounted versions of that.

What to check before you order
Four site conditions decide whether the install goes smoothly, and getting them wrong is the usual reason a unit arrives and cannot be commissioned.
Start with electrical service, because this range splits across two supplies. The CD60, CD85, CD100, CD100E, CS60, RM40, RM40P, RM40-SH, K100H, WM80, and RM4500 are listed at 110–115V. The AD850E, CD200, K100P, PD150-D, WM150-D, and Freestar are listed at 220V or 230V, which usually means bringing in an electrician. Where a listing does not state a voltage, confirm it before you order. Next, confirm the mounting spot has room for plenum connections, filter access, and service. Check the unit's rated external static pressure against your duct system before ordering, since a mismatch shows up as poor airflow after the install, not before. Last, sort out condensate: a gravity drain needs continuous fall to a drain point, and where that does not exist you need a condensate pump.
Most ducted installations are handled by a licensed HVAC contractor. To compare running costs across units, the ENERGY STAR dehumidifier program publishes the efficiency metric these are measured against.

Brio Air Filtration = Game Changer
Located in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, we acquired our Brio Air Filter in mid-late Spring of this year (2023) when pollen count was high and we were beginning to experience the effects of Poor Air Quality Index as a result of smoke particulates from fires in Canada that caused the air in much of Minnesota to become hazy and simply dirty.
It is so easy to share our experience with the Brio Air Filter given how quickly and efficiently it removed pollen, dust, and smoke particles from the environment inside our home. Two people in our home who suffer from pollen-related allergies during the spring immediately experienced easier breathing and elimination of symptoms within the house. With respect to smoke particulates from Canada drifting into our environment, EVERYONE in our home experienced directly improved breathing and smell of the air when entering from outside.
An additional piece of information to account for is that we have always employed high grade furnace filters in our home’s central HVAC system. With that high grade filtration in place both prior to and after acquiring a Brio home air filter, we all quickly agreed that deploying the Brio in our home made an easily noticeable positive difference in breathing inside our home. Additionally, those of us who clean our home have observed that dust builds up slower on our floors and furniture than before we deployed the Brio unit.
We did note that the Brio is not as quiet as a few other brands/models on the market that we have tried in our home but the efficiency and quality of the filtration, along with the air turnover rate it provides,allows us to locate the Brio unit in central rooms away from the bedrooms. Since we made that change there has been no noise-related effect on our sleep, while the unit maintains the same level of air cleanliness throughout our home.
A last key point to make is how easy the Brio unit is to maintain. The simplicity of the modular construction of the Brio unit makes it very quick and easy to keep the filtration sections clean. We have not yet reached a point of filter replacement but it is obvious to us that the replacement will take a matter of seconds and can be executed by anyone in our home, including our 10-year-old son.
