What Deck Width Should a Walk-Behind Floor Scrubber Have?

A walk-behind floor scrubber should be sized by the narrowest aisle it has to clear, not by the square footage of the building. Decks here run 13 to 34 inches. Thirteen to seventeen inches fits restroom stalls, patient rooms and retail back-of-house. Eighteen to twenty-two inches is the workhorse range for classrooms, main corridors and grocery floors. Twenty-six inches and up belongs in warehouses and big-box retail, where coverage rate matters more than turning radius. The common mistake is buying one mid-size machine for a whole building. A 26 inch deck cannot clear bedrails, and a 13 inch deck takes three shifts to cover a warehouse. Coverage runs from about 3,400 square feet an hour on the compact multiwash machines to 36,000 on a 22 inch traction drive unit.

Battery or Corded, and When Does Traction Drive Pay Off?

Corded compact machines cost less and never need a recharge, which suits restrooms and small offices cleaned in short bursts. Battery models free the operator from an outlet, the right call in schools, hospitals and retail where a trailing cord is a trip hazard under OSHA's walking-working surfaces rule. Runtime ranges from about 50 minutes on the smallest battery machines to five hours on lithium units. Traction drive starts paying off past a 22 inch deck, because a loaded 26 to 30 inch machine is too heavy to push comfortably for a full shift. Disk heads suit smooth floors, cylindrical heads handle grout lines and light debris, and orbital heads strip and refinish without chemicals.

How Does a Walk-Behind Auto Scrubber Compare to a Ride-On?

A walk-behind auto scrubber and a ride-on do the same job, so the choice comes down to route length and doorways rather than cleaning quality. Walk-behinds stay practical up to roughly 50,000 square feet per shift. Past that the operator spends more time walking than cleaning and a ride-on wins on labor cost alone. Walk-behinds also fit through standard doorways and into elevators, which settles it in multi-floor buildings whatever the area. Located in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, we acquired our Brio Air Filter in mid-late Spring of this year (2023) when pollen count was high and we were beginning to experience the effects of Poor Air Quality Index as a result of smoke particulates from fires in Canada that caused the air in much of Minnesota to become hazy and simply dirty.

It is so easy to share our experience with the Brio Air Filter given how quickly and efficiently it removed pollen, dust, and smoke particles from the environment inside our home. Additionally, those of us who clean our home have observed that dust builds up slower on our floors and furniture than before we deployed the Brio unit.

We did note that the Brio is not as quiet as a few other brands/models on the market that we have tried in our home but the efficiency and quality of the filtration, along with the air turnover rate it provides,allows us to locate the Brio unit in central rooms away from the bedrooms. Since we made that change there has been no noise-related effect on our sleep, while the unit maintains the same level of air cleanliness throughout our home.

We have not yet reached a point of filter replacement but it is obvious to us that the replacement will take a matter of seconds and can be executed by anyone in our home, including our 10-year-old son.
