Air Scrubber Filters for HEPA Negative Air Machines

Air scrubber filters here are genuine replacement stages for the negative air machines and portable scrubbers restoration crews already run, from Aerospace America and Abatement Technologies through XPOWER, Novatek, Nikro and KwiKool. A negative air machine is only as clean as its filter stack, so a clogged pre-filter or a HEPA past its hours quietly drops airflow and lets particulate through. On a containment job that shows up as a chamber that will not hold negative pressure.

Which Filter Stage Do You Need: Pre, Carbon, or HEPA?

Most air scrubbers run three or four stages and each does a different job. The pre-filter catches the coarse debris and protects everything behind it, so it gets changed most often and costs the least. A carbon or charcoal stage handles odour and gas-phase contaminants on smoke and sewage jobs, which particulate filters pass straight through. The HEPA is the final stage, capturing 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns — the size hardest to trap and the basis of the EPA definition of a HEPA filter. It lasts longest and costs the most, which is exactly why the cheap stage in front of it matters.

How Do You Match a Replacement Filter to Your Air Scrubber?

Go by the machine series and the frame dimensions, not just the word HEPA. An Aerospace 2000 CFM unit takes a 24x24x12 HEPA, the 1800 series takes 16x24x12, and the 600 MAG takes a 16x16x6, so a filter that fits one will not seat in another. Abatement HEPA-AIRE and Predator machines use their own Final Stage cartridges keyed to the model, and compact scrubbers such as the XPOWER X-2480A run 13" x 13" panels. Depth counts as much as face size: a V-shaped or deep-pleat HEPA holds far more media than a flat panel measuring the same across. Check the number printed on the old filter frame and order the same one.

When Should You Replace an Air Scrubber HEPA Filter?

Change the pre-filter every few days on a dusty job, the carbon stage when odour breaks through, and the HEPA when the machine's gauge shows the pressure drop climbing or after about 12 months of regular use. A minihelic gauge takes the guesswork out, since it reads the restriction directly. Running a loaded HEPA burns the motor and starves airflow, which costs more than the filter did. Nylon mesh pre-filters are washable and meant to be rinsed and reused; pleated media, carbon and HEPA elements are not, because washing collapses the media so the filter stops performing while still looking serviceable. Bag a spent HEPA before disposal, since the particulate it holds is what you were removing from the air. Common stages include the XPOWER NFS13 washable mesh pre-filter and the XPOWER HEPA35-33 filter.

What size filter does my air scrubber take?
Size is set by the machine family. Full-size negative air machines usually take 24" x 24" panels, mid-size units 18" x 24", and compact scrubbers 16" x 16" or 13" x 13". Check the model plate rather than measuring the old filter alone, as some variants within a family take different final-stage elements.
Can air scrubber HEPA filters be washed and reused?
No. Only nylon mesh pre-filters are washable. Pleated media, activated carbon, rigid polyester and HEPA elements are replace-only — washing collapses the media, so the filter stops performing while still looking usable.
How often should air scrubber filters be replaced?
By load, not by calendar. Drywall dust on a demolition job can load a pre-filter in days, while the same machine on a water-damage dry-out may run for weeks. Judge by airflow and visible loading, and change the pre-filter first since it protects every stage behind it.
Do I have to run a pre-filter?
Yes. The pre-filter catches lint, hair and coarse debris before they reach the HEPA. Leaving it out sends the whole load to the most expensive element in the stack and shortens its life considerably.
Are filters interchangeable between brands if the size matches?
Not reliably. Face dimensions can match while depth, frame and gasket do not, and a filter that does not seal lets air bypass the media entirely. A V-shaped or deep-pleat HEPA is not a substitute for a flat panel of the same face size. Order by the machine model.
What does an activated carbon filter do that HEPA does not?
Carbon adsorbs gases — odours and VOCs from smoke, sewage, mildew and solvents — which particulate filters pass straight through. HEPA traps particles. Jobs with an odour component need both stages.

Brio Air Filtration = Game Changer

Located in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, we acquired our Brio Air Filter in mid-late Spring of this year (2023) when pollen count was high and we were beginning to experience the effects of Poor Air Quality Index as a result of smoke particulates from fires in Canada that caused the air in much of Minnesota to become hazy and simply dirty.

It is so easy to share our experience with the Brio Air Filter given how quickly and efficiently it removed pollen, dust, and smoke particles from the environment inside our home. Two people in our home who suffer from pollen-related allergies during the spring immediately experienced easier breathing and elimination of symptoms within the house. With respect to smoke particulates from Canada drifting into our environment, EVERYONE in our home experienced directly improved breathing and smell of the air when entering from outside.

An additional piece of information to account for is that we have always employed high grade furnace filters in our home’s central HVAC system. With that high grade filtration in place both prior to and after acquiring a Brio home air filter, we all quickly agreed that deploying the Brio in our home made an easily noticeable positive difference in breathing inside our home. Additionally, those of us who clean our home have observed that dust builds up slower on our floors and furniture than before we deployed the Brio unit.

We did note that the Brio is not as quiet as a few other brands/models on the market that we have tried in our home but the efficiency and quality of the filtration, along with the air turnover rate it provides,allows us to locate the Brio unit in central rooms away from the bedrooms. Since we made that change there has been no noise-related effect on our sleep, while the unit maintains the same level of air cleanliness throughout our home.

A last key point to make is how easy the Brio unit is to maintain. The simplicity of the modular construction of the Brio unit makes it very quick and easy to keep the filtration sections clean. We have not yet reached a point of filter replacement but it is obvious to us that the replacement will take a matter of seconds and can be executed by anyone in our home, including our 10-year-old son.
