Mercury BOSS-2 Dual-Speed Floor Machine – Five Interchangeable Aprons from 13" to 21"
The BOSS-2 is Mercury's most flexible dual-speed floor machine: one machine accepts five interchangeable apron sizes (13", 15", 17", 19", and 21") mounted via thumb-screw, allowing a single unit to cover restrooms with the 13" apron and open corridors with the 21". It runs the same 1.5 HP A/C dual-capacitor motor as the single-speed BMT-175-Y but adds a second speed — 175 RPM for scrubbing and stripping, 300 RPM for spray buffing and polishing. The triple-planetary transmission eliminates startup torque across both speed settings.
BOSS-2 Motor, Transmission, and Apron System
Motor: 1.5 HP A/C, 2 capacitors, 15 Amp — A/C design with dual capacitor for reliable starting and smooth speed transitions
Transmission: triple-planetary high-torque — smooth across 175 and 300 RPM
Interchangeable aprons: 13", 15", 17", 19", 21" — all with easy thumb-screw mount
Machine weight: 90–107 lbs. depending on apron size
Brush drive: universal clutch plate — accepts standard pad drivers
Wheels: 6" non-marking, fixed operating wheels
Power cord: 50-ft. 14/3-gauge safety cord
Warranty: 5 years on motor, gearbox, and chassis
Where the BOSS-2 Gets Used
The five-apron flexibility makes the BOSS-2 the right choice for facilities with highly variable floor spaces — schools with restrooms, corridors, and gymnasium floors; hotels with guest bathrooms, hallways, and lobby areas; or contract cleaning companies that need one machine adaptable to different account sizes. Rather than stocking a 17" machine for restrooms and a 21" for lobbies, a facility can maintain a single BOSS-2 and swap aprons in the storage closet as routes change. The dual speed adds the ability to scrub and spray-buff in the same visit without bringing a second machine.
Pro Application Details for the BOSS-2
The BOSS-2 differs from the single-speed BMT-175-Y in two meaningful ways: it adds 300 RPM spray-buff capability, and it uses an A/C motor with dual capacitors rather than a D/C rectified design. The dual-capacitor A/C motor starts smoothly and maintains speed under varying load — it handles the torque demand of switching between apron sizes without adjustment. The universal clutch plate accepts most aftermarket pad drivers in sizes matching each apron. At 175 RPM: black pads strip, green/blue scrub. At 300 RPM: red spray-buff pads restore gloss, white pads polish lightly. The 5-year warranty on the motor, gearbox, and chassis applies regardless of apron size used.

Frequently Asked Questions
What apron sizes does the Mercury BOSS-2 accept?
The BOSS-2 accepts five interchangeable apron sizes: 13", 15", 17", 19", and 21", all mounted via thumb-screw. Machine weight ranges from 90 to 107 lbs. depending on which apron is installed.
What are the two speeds on the BOSS-2 and what tasks do they suit?
The BOSS-2 runs at 175 RPM for scrubbing and stripping (black pads strip, green/blue pads scrub) and 300 RPM for spray buffing and light polishing (red pads spray-buff, white pads polish lightly).
How does the BOSS-2 differ from the BMT-175-Y?
The BMT-175-Y is single-speed (175 RPM only) and ships with the Unicorn Weight Kit and 4-gallon solution tank included. The BOSS-2 adds a second speed (300 RPM for spray buffing) and offers five apron sizes instead of three, but the weight kit and solution tank are optional add-ons rather than included accessories.
Does the BOSS-2 work with optional weight kit and solution tank?
Yes. The Unicorn Weight Kit (Model UWK — five 10-lb. weights with mounting shaft) and 4-gallon solution tank (Model SST-4) are available as optional accessories for the BOSS-2. They do not come included in the standard package.
What warranty does the Mercury BOSS-2 carry?
Mercury covers the BOSS-2 with a 5-year warranty on the motor, gearbox, and chassis.
Why does the BOSS-2 use an A/C motor with dual capacitors rather than a DC motor?
The dual-capacitor A/C motor design provides reliable starting and smooth speed transitions between 175 and 300 RPM. The two capacitors — a start capacitor and a run capacitor — work together to reduce startup current draw and maintain consistent torque under varying load conditions as apron size changes.

Located in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, we acquired our Brio Air Filter in mid-late Spring of this year (2023) when pollen count was high and we were beginning to experience the effects of Poor Air Quality Index as a result of smoke particulates from fires in Canada that caused the air in much of Minnesota to become hazy and simply dirty.
It is so easy to share our experience with the Brio Air Filter given how quickly and efficiently it removed pollen, dust, and smoke particles from the environment inside our home. Two people in our home who suffer from pollen-related allergies during the spring immediately experienced easier breathing and elimination of symptoms within the house. With respect to smoke particulates from Canada drifting into our environment, EVERYONE in our home experienced directly improved breathing and smell of the air when entering from outside.
An additional piece of information to account for is that we have always employed high grade furnace filters in our home’s central HVAC system. With that high grade filtration in place both prior to and after acquiring a Brio home air filter, we all quickly agreed that deploying the Brio in our home made an easily noticeable positive difference in breathing inside our home. Additionally, those of us who clean our home have observed that dust builds up slower on our floors and furniture than before we deployed the Brio unit.
We did note that the Brio is not as quiet as a few other brands/models on the market that we have tried in our home but the efficiency and quality of the filtration, along with the air turnover rate it provides, allows us to locate the Brio unit in central rooms away from the bedrooms. Since we made that change there has been no noise-related effect on our sleep, while the unit maintains the same level of air cleanliness throughout our home.
A last key point to make is how easy the Brio unit is to maintain. The simplicity of the modular construction of the Brio unit makes it very quick and easy to keep the filtration sections clean. We have not yet reached a point of filter replacement but it is obvious to us that the replacement will take a matter of seconds and can be executed by anyone in our home, including our 10-year-old son.
It seems to help reduce my allergy issues. We're glad we bought it. The only problem I had was not seeing any cubic footage recommendations in the online description when purchasing the unit. Bedrooms vary widely in size!!
