BOSS-1 Floor Machine — Single-Machine Coverage Across Five Pad Sizes with Triple-Planetary Transmission
The Mercury BOSS-1 replaces the need for multiple floor machines by accepting five apron sizes — 13", 15", 17", 19", and 21" — via a thumb-screw mount that swaps in under a minute. The 1.5 HP AC rectified motor and triple-planetary transmission deliver consistent torque at 175 RPM whether the operator is stripping a 21" apron on a heavily waxed VCT floor or buffing with a 13" pad in a tight restroom. At 90–107 lbs depending on apron selection, it stays planted without operator effort and handles the load variation between pad sizes without gear chatter or speed drop.
BOSS-1 Motor, Transmission, and Apron System
The triple-planetary gearbox and interchangeable apron system are the two features that determine whether this machine earns a permanent place in a cleaning contractor's trailer or gets replaced by a dedicated machine for each pad size.
Five interchangeable apron sizes (13" to 21") on thumb-screw mount — swap pad size in under a minute; no tools, no separate machines for corridor scrubbing vs. open-floor buffing
1.5 HP AC rectified motor at 175 RPM — enough torque for strip jobs on heavy wax buildup without bogging down; consistent speed across all five apron sizes via the planetary gearbox
Triple-planetary transmission — distributes load across three gear sets, reducing wear per gear and extending transmission life under heavy daily use in commercial environments
Polished aluminum chassis with universal clutch brush drive — aluminum resists rust in wet scrubbing applications; the universal clutch engages and disengages the pad without stopping the motor
50 ft, 14/3-gauge safety power cord — reaches from a single outlet across most commercial restrooms, corridors, and classrooms without extension cords; 14/3 gauge handles the 1.5 HP motor draw safely
Non-conductive dual triggers and adjustable 48" handle — interlock switch prevents accidental starts; 48" handle height suits operators from 5'2" to 6'4" without stooping
BOSS-1 Applications and Environments
Commercial cleaning contractors working across multiple account types — schools, offices, hospitals, and retail — rely on the BOSS-1's apron swap capability to run one machine across every job without bringing separate equipment for each floor finish specification. Facility maintenance departments in municipal buildings and universities with mixed floor types (VCT corridors, terrazzo lobbies, sealed concrete utility areas) use it to consolidate equipment inventory without sacrificing pad size flexibility. The 5-year motor, gearbox, and chassis warranty matters most to in-house maintenance teams amortizing equipment cost over multi-year service schedules rather than leasing on annual contracts.
BOSS-1 RPM, Pad Pressure, and Compatible Pads
The BOSS-1 runs at 175 RPM — the standard low-speed range for spray buffing, scrubbing, and stripping on VCT, terrazzo, resilient flooring, and sealed concrete. At this speed and weight (90–107 lbs depending on apron), pad pressure is approximately 40–55 lbs depending on apron size selected. Compatible with standard round floor pads in each apron diameter: use black or brown pads for stripping, green for scrubbing, red for spray buffing, and white or tan for polishing. Pads are sold separately. For burnishing applications requiring 1,000+ RPM, the BOSS-1 is not the appropriate machine — see Mercury's high-speed burnisher line. Optional Unicorn Weight Kit (5 × 10 lb weights, model UWK) adds downward pad pressure for heavy-strip applications. Optional 4-gallon polyethylene solution tank (model SST-4) with chemical-resistant hose enables wet scrubbing without a separate dispenser.
The BOSS-1 accepts five interchangeable apron sizes: 13", 15", 17", 19", and 21". Aprons swap via a thumb-screw mount without tools. Each apron size takes a standard round floor pad in the matching diameter — pads are sold separately.
What floor types can the BOSS-1 scrub, strip, or buff?
The BOSS-1 at 175 RPM is appropriate for VCT, terrazzo, resilient flooring, and sealed concrete. Use black or brown pads for stripping, green for scrubbing, red for spray buffing, and white or tan for polishing. It is not designed for burnishing applications requiring 1,000+ RPM.
What is the BOSS-1 transmission type and why does it matter?
The BOSS-1 uses a triple-planetary transmission, which distributes the motor load across three gear sets simultaneously. This reduces wear per gear and provides consistent speed and torque across all five apron sizes under heavy daily commercial use.
Does the BOSS-1 come with a solution tank for wet scrubbing?
The solution tank is optional, not included standard. The optional 4-gallon polyethylene solution tank (model SST-4) includes a chemical-resistant dispensing hose and attaches to the machine for wet scrubbing applications.
Can I add weight to increase pad pressure on the BOSS-1?
Yes. The optional Unicorn Weight Kit (model UWK) includes five 10 lb weights with a mounting shaft, adding up to 50 lbs of additional downward pad pressure for heavy-strip applications on floors with thick wax buildup.
What warranty does the Mercury BOSS-1 carry?
The BOSS-1 carries a 5-year warranty covering the motor, gearbox, and chassis — longer than the 1–3 year coverage typical on competing commercial floor machines in this category.

Located in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, we acquired our Brio Air Filter in mid-late Spring of this year (2023) when pollen count was high and we were beginning to experience the effects of Poor Air Quality Index as a result of smoke particulates from fires in Canada that caused the air in much of Minnesota to become hazy and simply dirty.
It is so easy to share our experience with the Brio Air Filter given how quickly and efficiently it removed pollen, dust, and smoke particles from the environment inside our home. Two people in our home who suffer from pollen-related allergies during the spring immediately experienced easier breathing and elimination of symptoms within the house. With respect to smoke particulates from Canada drifting into our environment, EVERYONE in our home experienced directly improved breathing and smell of the air when entering from outside.
An additional piece of information to account for is that we have always employed high grade furnace filters in our home’s central HVAC system. With that high grade filtration in place both prior to and after acquiring a Brio home air filter, we all quickly agreed that deploying the Brio in our home made an easily noticeable positive difference in breathing inside our home. Additionally, those of us who clean our home have observed that dust builds up slower on our floors and furniture than before we deployed the Brio unit.
We did note that the Brio is not as quiet as a few other brands/models on the market that we have tried in our home but the efficiency and quality of the filtration, along with the air turnover rate it provides, allows us to locate the Brio unit in central rooms away from the bedrooms. Since we made that change there has been no noise-related effect on our sleep, while the unit maintains the same level of air cleanliness throughout our home.
A last key point to make is how easy the Brio unit is to maintain. The simplicity of the modular construction of the Brio unit makes it very quick and easy to keep the filtration sections clean. We have not yet reached a point of filter replacement but it is obvious to us that the replacement will take a matter of seconds and can be executed by anyone in our home, including our 10-year-old son.
It seems to help reduce my allergy issues. We're glad we bought it. The only problem I had was not seeing any cubic footage recommendations in the online description when purchasing the unit. Bedrooms vary widely in size!!
