Ash is the particle size that defeats a household vacuum — fine enough to pass straight through a paper filter and back into the room. The Cougar+ uses a two-stage system with a PTFE-coated second filter and a metal flex hose, and it is rated for cool to warm ash rather than hot material.
Cougar+ Filtration and Ash Handling
Two stages, because one filter doing both jobs clogs immediately.
- Two-stage filtration — the first stage takes the coarse material, the PTFE-coated second stage catches the fines that would otherwise blow back into the room
- 90 CFM with 55" water lift — enough suction to clear a firebox without stirring the ash bed into the air
- 5 ft metal flex hose and 13" metal nozzle — metal at the intake, where warm ash contacts the tool
- External filter cleaning — knock the ash off the filter without opening the drum
- Sealed 6-gallon drum — leak-resistant construction so ash does not escape at the seams
- 8-piece tool kit included — reaches into corners of fireboxes, stoves and grills
Cougar+ Applications and Environments
Chimney sweeps and hearth retailers run these daily; homeowners with wood or pellet stoves buy one because a shop vac ruins its filter on the first cleanout. It suits fireplaces, wood and coal stoves, pellet stoves, fire pits and BBQ grills. Use it on cool to warm ash only — Dustless does not rate the Cougar+ for hot coals or live embers, and ash should be allowed to cool before vacuuming. The unit ships with the vacuum, inner filter, outer filter, 5-foot metal flex hose, 13-inch metal nozzle and an 8-piece tool kit, backed by a 3-year warranty.
