Which HEPA Vacuum Style Fits the Work?

Backpack HEPA vacuums from Sandia, Mosquito America, NaceCare, Prolux, Dustless Technologies and Bissell stay on the operator's shoulders, allowing restoration and janitorial crews to cover large floor areas without setting down a canister. Upright HEPA vacuums from Prolux are used in carpeted schools, offices and hotels where sealed filtration is required in the cleaning spec. Wet/dry drum vacuums from Nikro, Dustless Technologies, Delfin Industrial and Abatement Technologies run 8 to 55 gallons for slurry, drilling dust and demolition debris. Pneumatic models from Novatek and Nikro run on shop air where an electric motor is not permitted. Airflow on the portable machines runs 74 to 170 CFM; two Air-Care duct-cleaning machines are also available at 200 and 500 CFM for HVAC work.

True HEPA vs HEPA-Style — Why Sealed Housing Matters for Compliance

True HEPA filters capture 99.97% of airborne particles at 0.3 microns, and that number is identical across brands. The housing is where they part ways. HEPA-style vacuums use HEPA-rated filter media but rely on gasket seals and housing joints that allow bypass airflow around the filter, so filtration fails at the exact particle sizes that matter for asbestos fibers, lead dust, and mold spores. Certified HEPA vacuums for abatement applications require fully sealed housing, where all air passes through the filter with no bypass pathway. ETL and other third-party bodies test and certify to that standard. The EPA asbestos abatement regulations require HEPA-filtered vacuums during the cleanup phase of any regulated asbestos project. An unsealed "HEPA-style" unit on a regulated job site is a compliance violation regardless of the filter's rated efficiency.

HEPA Vacuums for Mold Remediation, Lead Paint, and Asbestos Cleanup

Asbestos abatement contractors use HEPA vacuums for the final cleanup phase of asbestos removal: vacuuming settled fibers from horizontal surfaces, cleaning containment barriers before breakdown, and decontaminating the work area. Lead paint abatement follows the same protocol. The EPA RRP Rule (Renovation, Repair, and Painting) requires HEPA vacuum use during cleanup of lead paint disturbance in pre-1978 buildings where children or pregnant women occupy the space. Mold remediation containment cleanup uses HEPA vacuums to remove settled mold spores from surfaces before antimicrobial treatment. Skip the follow-up cleaning and viable spores stay behind to regrow, so the order of operations matters. The OSHA asbestos standard (29 CFR 1926.1101 for construction) specifies that asbestos waste must be placed in impermeable containers immediately upon removal and any vacuum system used must meet HEPA filtration requirements. Bag-in-bag disposal protocols for used HEPA filters are part of compliant abatement procedure.

What makes a vacuum a true HEPA vacuum?
The filter and the housing together. A true HEPA filter captures 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns, and every brand's filter meets that number, so the filter is not what separates the machines. A compliance-grade vacuum has a fully sealed housing where all the air passes through the filter with no bypass around a gasket or a seam. A HEPA-style vacuum puts the same filter media in a housing that leaks, which defeats it at exactly the particle sizes that matter.
Which HEPA vacuum do I need for asbestos or lead work?
A sealed one. Under the EPA RRP Rule a HEPA vacuum is required during cleanup of lead paint disturbance in pre-1978 buildings, and OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 requires HEPA filtration on any vacuum used in regulated asbestos work. Crews usually run a drum vacuum for the containment and a backpack for surfaces. Backpack or upright HEPA vacuum?
Backpacks cover open floor fastest, which is why restoration and janitorial crews carry them through large areas; the ones here hold 6 to 10.5 quarts and move 74 to 170 CFM. Uprights suit carpeted schools, offices and hotels where sealed filtration sits in the cleaning spec and the crew works room to room. Buyers who do both usually start with the backpack and keep an upright on the cart.
Can a HEPA vacuum pick up water?
Only the wet/dry models. Several NIKRO drums are wet-convertible, and the Abatement V8000WD, the Dustless D1618 and D1606 and the Delfin HV107 take liquid directly. Running a dry-only HEPA vacuum through standing water ruins the filter, and a soaked HEPA element is scrap rather than something you dry out and put back.
How often do HEPA filters need changing?
Change on measured suction loss, not on a calendar. Most crews swap bags and pre-filters often and the HEPA element far less, but a filter that got shock-loaded because someone ran the machine without a bag can be finished in one job. On regulated asbestos work the used filter is contaminated waste: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 puts it in an impermeable container, bagged inside the containment with everything else.

Brio Air Filtration = Game Changer

Located in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, we acquired our Brio Air Filter in mid-late Spring of this year (2023) when pollen count was high and we were beginning to experience the effects of Poor Air Quality Index as a result of smoke particulates from fires in Canada that caused the air in much of Minnesota to become hazy and simply dirty.

It is so easy to share our experience with the Brio Air Filter given how quickly and efficiently it removed pollen, dust, and smoke particles from the environment inside our home. Two people in our home who suffer from pollen-related allergies during the spring immediately experienced easier breathing and elimination of symptoms within the house. With respect to smoke particulates from Canada drifting into our environment, EVERYONE in our home experienced directly improved breathing and smell of the air when entering from outside.

An additional piece of information to account for is that we have always employed high grade furnace filters in our home’s central HVAC system. With that high grade filtration in place both prior to and after acquiring a Brio home air filter, we all quickly agreed that deploying the Brio in our home made an easily noticeable positive difference in breathing inside our home. Additionally, those of us who clean our home have observed that dust builds up slower on our floors and furniture than before we deployed the Brio unit.

We did note that the Brio is not as quiet as a few other brands/models on the market that we have tried in our home but the efficiency and quality of the filtration, along with the air turnover rate it provides,allows us to locate the Brio unit in central rooms away from the bedrooms. Since we made that change there has been no noise-related effect on our sleep, while the unit maintains the same level of air cleanliness throughout our home.

A last key point to make is how easy the Brio unit is to maintain. The simplicity of the modular construction of the Brio unit makes it very quick and easy to keep the filtration sections clean. We have not yet reached a point of filter replacement but it is obvious to us that the replacement will take a matter of seconds and can be executed by anyone in our home, including our 10-year-old son.
