The Bissell BGC-1 is the base model of the Bissell Big Green Commercial FMC (Floor Maintenance Center) line — a heavy-duty floor machine built for facilities that need one chassis to handle scrubbing, stripping, and polishing across multiple floor types. The interchangeable apron system — covering 13", 15", 17", 19", and 21" sizes — lets one machine serve different facility zones without purchasing separate floor buffers. The 1.5 HP motor and triple-planetary high-torque transmission deliver consistent 175 RPM output across pad types without the slowdown that lower-torque machines show when loaded with a stripping pad on heavily finished VCT.
BGC-1 Motor, Transmission, and Apron Compatibility
Floor machine selection comes down to motor torque, pad speed, and whether one machine can handle the full range of floor care tasks in a facility. The BGC-1's triple-planetary gearbox is what separates this machine from consumer-grade buffers — it maintains consistent RPM under the load of aggressive stripping pads and is designed for the sustained 4-to-8-hour daily cycles of commercial building maintenance.
1.5 HP motor at 175 RPM — commercial-grade output appropriate for spray buffing, wet scrubbing, and chemical stripping on VCT, concrete, and resilient tile
Triple-planetary high-torque transmission — maintains consistent speed under pad resistance; single-planetary transmissions slow noticeably under stripping pad load
Interchangeable aprons: 13"–21" — sold separately; allows one machine to serve small office suites (13") and large open floors (21") without duplicate equipment
Interlock safety switch — requires both hands on the handle for operation; meets OSHA standards for occupied-space commercial floor equipment
Available one-speed and two-speed — two-speed adds a higher RPM option for dry burnishing without a separate burnisher for applications that don't require 1,500+ RPM
BGC-1 Applications and Environments
School districts and municipal facilities managing VCT floors in corridors, gymnasiums, and cafeterias use the BGC-1 as the workhorse buffer for weekly spray buffing and seasonal stripping cycles. Healthcare facilities maintaining polished resilient tile in patient corridors and common areas need the sustained low-RPM torque of the triple-planetary gearbox for consistent finish maintenance without motor overheating during extended shifts. Retail chains and office building service contractors use the apron swap feature to deploy one machine across multiple floor types and cleaning tasks — reducing equipment inventory costs without sacrificing performance.
BGC-1 RPM, Pad Pressure, and Compatible Pads
Runs at 175 RPM with pad pressure determined by the machine's operating weight on the selected apron size. Compatible with standard round floor pads in the selected apron diameter — use tan/white for polishing, red for spray buffing, green for scrubbing, brown/black for stripping. The BGC-1's 175 RPM is in the spray buffing and scrubbing range — not appropriate for high-gloss burnishing, which requires 1,500+ RPM. For burnishing, see Bissell's BGDC burnisher line.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the BGC-1 do and what surfaces can it clean?
The BGC-1 is a 17-inch commercial floor machine for spray buffing, wet scrubbing, and chemical stripping on VCT, concrete, and resilient tile. The interchangeable apron system lets one chassis serve different floor zones from 13 to 21 inches.
What is the difference between a floor scrubber and a buffer?
The BGC-1 runs at 175 RPM, which is the spray buffing and scrubbing range, not the high-gloss burnishing range. A scrubber or buffer at this speed cleans and maintains finish, while a burnisher runs at 1,500 RPM or higher to produce a high gloss. For burnishing, Bissell offers a separate burnisher line.
What pads or brushes does the BGC-1 use?
It accepts standard round floor pads in the selected apron diameter. Use tan or white for polishing, red for spray buffing, green for scrubbing, and brown or black for stripping. Aprons in 13, 15, 17, 19, and 21 inches are sold separately.
How large an area can the BGC-1 clean?
Coverage depends on the apron size selected, from small office suites with the 13-inch apron to large open floors with the 21-inch apron. The 1.5 HP motor and triple-planetary transmission hold a consistent 175 RPM under pad load through sustained 4-to-8-hour daily cycles.

Located in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, we acquired our Brio Air Filter in mid-late Spring of this year (2023) when pollen count was high and we were beginning to experience the effects of Poor Air Quality Index as a result of smoke particulates from fires in Canada that caused the air in much of Minnesota to become hazy and simply dirty.
It is so easy to share our experience with the Brio Air Filter given how quickly and efficiently it removed pollen, dust, and smoke particles from the environment inside our home. Two people in our home who suffer from pollen-related allergies during the spring immediately experienced easier breathing and elimination of symptoms within the house. With respect to smoke particulates from Canada drifting into our environment, EVERYONE in our home experienced directly improved breathing and smell of the air when entering from outside.
An additional piece of information to account for is that we have always employed high grade furnace filters in our home’s central HVAC system. With that high grade filtration in place both prior to and after acquiring a Brio home air filter, we all quickly agreed that deploying the Brio in our home made an easily noticeable positive difference in breathing inside our home. Additionally, those of us who clean our home have observed that dust builds up slower on our floors and furniture than before we deployed the Brio unit.
We did note that the Brio is not as quiet as a few other brands/models on the market that we have tried in our home but the efficiency and quality of the filtration, along with the air turnover rate it provides, allows us to locate the Brio unit in central rooms away from the bedrooms. Since we made that change there has been no noise-related effect on our sleep, while the unit maintains the same level of air cleanliness throughout our home.
A last key point to make is how easy the Brio unit is to maintain. The simplicity of the modular construction of the Brio unit makes it very quick and easy to keep the filtration sections clean. We have not yet reached a point of filter replacement but it is obvious to us that the replacement will take a matter of seconds and can be executed by anyone in our home, including our 10-year-old son.
It seems to help reduce my allergy issues. We're glad we bought it. The only problem I had was not seeing any cubic footage recommendations in the online description when purchasing the unit. Bedrooms vary widely in size!!
