Battery-Powered Floor Scrubbers for Cord-Free Operation
Battery Technology in Floor Scrubbers
Battery-powered floor scrubbers use sealed lead-acid (SLA) or lithium-ion battery packs to drive the scrub brush motor, traction drive (on propelled models), and solution and recovery pump systems without a power cord. SLA batteries provide 45–60 minutes of run time on a full charge and require 8–12 hours for a complete recharge cycle. Lithium-ion packs provide comparable run time with faster 2–4 hour recharge and a longer battery service life — typically 2,000 charge cycles versus 500–800 cycles for SLA — making them the preferred option for operations running multiple shifts. Most models in this range carry deck widths of 14–20 inches and 5–10 gallon solution tanks.
Battery-Powered vs. Corded Floor Scrubbers
Corded scrubbers provide unlimited run time and are preferred in facilities with fixed cleaning routes near electrical outlets. Battery-powered models are preferred wherever cords create trip hazards, where the floor layout makes cord routing difficult, or where the operator covers multiple areas that cannot be served from a single outlet without long extension cord runs. Grocery stores, restaurants, and healthcare facilities — where cords create hazards around customers, patients, and food prep surfaces — are common battery-scrubber applications. Battery models cost more upfront and require battery replacement every 3–5 years, but eliminate the extension cord procurement, storage, and trip-hazard liability that corded machines require.

Selecting a Battery-Powered Floor Scrubber
Match deck size to your facility's cleaning area and aisle width. For tight spaces, a 14-inch battery scrubber provides the same cord-free benefits in the same tight-space footprint as a compact corded model. For open facilities, a 17- or 20-inch battery model increases production per charge cycle. Verify that the battery type and charger are included with the machine — some manufacturers sell chargers separately. For high-frequency use, lithium-ion battery models reduce long-term operating cost and eliminate the overnight charging requirement that SLA packs impose on operations that run evening and overnight cleaning shifts.
