Two-Stage Reciprocating Compressors for Continuous-Duty Contractor Use
Two-stage reciprocating air compressors run cooler and last longer than single-stage units under the duty cycles contractors actually pull on a job site. Single-stage compressors hit working pressure in one piston pass, run hot at the head, and wear out the rings inside 18–24 months of daily auto-shop or contractor service. Two-stage units pre-compress air in a large piston, intercool between stages, and finish the compression in a smaller high-pressure piston, which keeps head temperatures well below the threshold that breaks down compressor oil and varnishes the valves. The result is a unit that holds 175 PSI working pressure indefinitely under intermittent tool demand without thermal-overload cycling. ASME-coded steel tanks (30-gallon and 80-gallon are the standard contractor sizes) carry the pressure-vessel certification commercial and industrial insurance underwriters now require on job sites.
Mi-T-M Two-Stage Gas Air Compressors: 17.2–29 CFM at 175 PSI
The Mi-T-M ABS and AM2 series cover the gas-powered side of the catalog with cast-iron two-stage pumps and a choice of Honda GX270 (270cc, 9 HP), Honda GX390 (389cc, 13 HP), Kohler CH440 (429cc, 14 HP), or Mi-T-M 300–420cc OHV powerplants. Output ranges from 17.2 CFM at 175 PSI on the AM2-SH09 / SM09 30-gallon units up to 29 CFM at 175 PSI on the ABS-14M-B base-mount truck-rig configuration. Tank options run 30-gallon and 80-gallon ASME for stationary shop use, plus tank-less base-mount versions (suffix "-B") for service trucks, mobile tire rigs, and trailer installations where the receiver tank lives elsewhere. Electric-start variants (suffix "-ME" or "-30ME") drop the pull-cord step on cold-morning service calls. The cast-iron pump construction is the durability spec that separates these from aluminum-pump consumer compressors that fail at the head gasket inside the first year of contractor service.

Sizing Compressors by CFM Demand and Duty Cycle
Sizing an air compressor starts from the CFM rating of the highest-demand pneumatic tool on the operator's tool list, not from the tank size. A 1-inch impact wrench draws 4–6 CFM intermittent, a HVLP automotive paint spray gun pulls 8–11 CFM continuous, and a die grinder consumes 5–8 CFM continuous — add the simultaneous-use CFMs to get the minimum compressor output. Duty cycle (the ratio of run time to total time) matters next: a 50% duty-cycle unit running an air sander continuously will overheat, while a 75% or 100% duty-cycle two-stage runs the same load all shift. ASME tank capacity buffers short bursts but does not replace inadequate CFM — a 30-gallon tank on a 6 CFM compressor will not paint a car panel any better than a 30-gallon tank on a 6 CFM compressor with an extra 100 PSI of working pressure.
