Decontamination Showers for Hazardous Material Abatement

How Decon Showers Work on Abatement Job Sites

Decontamination shower systems create a sequenced clean-to-dirty pathway for workers exiting an asbestos, lead, or mold abatement work zone. The standard three-chamber decon unit consists of an equipment room where workers remove contaminated Tyvek suits and tape, a shower room where workers rinse contaminated skin and hair under running water, and a clean room where street clothes and clean PPE are stored. This sequence prevents fiber or dust transfer from the work area to building common spaces and to workers' personal vehicles and homes. Portable shower units connect to an on-site water supply and discharge to a drain or portable waste collection container.

OSHA Requirements for Decontamination Facilities

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1101 mandates decontamination facilities for Class I asbestos work (removal of thermal system insulation and surfacing material) and Class II work above the action level. The regulation specifies a three-stage decon unit with shower facilities and running potable water. EPA NESHAP regulations for asbestos demolition and renovation projects incorporate similar decon requirements. Failure to provide compliant decon facilities results in OSHA citations that can reach $15,625 per violation per day for serious violations, and can result in project stop-work orders by state environmental agencies conducting abatement inspections.

Selecting a Portable Decontamination Shower

Portable decon units range from simple tent-based systems that assemble in under an hour to prefabricated trailer-mounted units for large or long-duration projects. For small-scope asbestos or lead projects lasting one to five days, a portable tent-style decon unit with a heated shower provides regulatory compliance without the cost of a trailer unit. For long-duration large-scale abatement or demolition projects, a trailer-mounted unit with heated water, changing room space for multiple workers, and HEPA-filtered exhaust ventilation is the appropriate configuration. Verify water supply requirements and drainage options before selecting a model, as portable units require a minimum water pressure and flow rate to operate the shower properly.
