Central Air Dehumidifiers for Whole-Home Humidity Integrated with Central HVAC

Why Central Air Conditioning Alone Cannot Hold Target Humidity

Central air conditioning removes moisture as a byproduct of cooling, but only while the cooling cycle is active. In mild weather, when the AC cycles infrequently or runs short cycles, the system cannot stay on long enough to extract the moisture load — humidity climbs even with target temperature held. Central air dehumidifiers solve this by running independently of the cooling cycle, dehumidifying continuously based on humidity setpoint rather than temperature. Integrated into the central HVAC ductwork, they share the supply distribution that conditions the entire home, delivering uniform humidity control across every room without portable units in occupied spaces.

Sizing Central Air Dehumidifiers for Residential Application

Central air dehumidifier sizing follows total conditioned square footage, climate zone moisture load, and HVAC system CFM. The Ebac CD60 (60 PPD) and CD85 (75 PPD) cover small residential homes 1,200–1,800 sq ft in moderate-humidity climate zones. The CD100 and CD100E (90–97 PPD) handle typical 1,800–3,000 sq ft homes including humid southern US climates where the moisture load is consistently higher. The K100E (97 PPD WiFi-enabled) adds remote humidity monitoring through a smartphone app — useful for second homes, vacation properties, and homeowners who travel and want humidity verification while away. The CD200 (138 PPD, 664 CFM) and AD850E (95 PPD) cover larger homes 3,000+ sq ft, multi-zone HVAC systems, and homes with attached dehumidified spaces (basement, crawl space, garage).

Integration with Existing Central HVAC Systems

Central air dehumidifier integration uses one of two install paths. Side-mount installation places the dehumidifier in parallel with the air handler's return duct, drawing return air through the dehumidifier, dehumidifying, and returning to the air handler for distribution. Stand-alone with shared distribution mounts the dehumidifier separately from the HVAC chassis but uses the same supply ductwork — useful when the air handler location does not have clearance for side-mount equipment. Either configuration requires HVAC contractor installation including duct modifications, drain routing, electrical connection, and humidistat integration with the existing thermostat or a dedicated humidity controller. Confirm warranty coverage with the HVAC professional — some manufacturers require professional installation for the warranty to remain valid.
