4000 PSI Pressure Washers for Concrete and Heavy Contracting
What 4000 PSI Actually Cleans
The 4000 PSI band is where pressure washers stop being yard tools and start being commercial equipment. Concrete sidewalks, parking lots, loading docks, and graffiti come off in a single pass at the right GPM and tip combination. Sealed concrete and stamped surfaces need the 0-degree or 15-degree tip; broom-finished concrete and brick respond better to 25 degrees with a surface cleaner attachment. Below 4000 PSI the same job often needs two or three passes plus chemical, which is the productivity gap that justifies stepping up.
Pump and Engine Pairings to Verify
At 4000 PSI most builds run a Honda GX390 or Kohler Command CH395 paired with a triplex AR or Cat pump rated 4 GPM. Check that the pump is sized to the engine: a 4 GPM pump on a smaller engine will choke and shorten service life under sustained load. Belt drive and direct drive both work at this tier; belt drive runs cooler, lasts longer, and is the right pick for crews running 20-plus hours per week. Direct drive is lighter and cheaper to acquire, which suits part-time and seasonal use.

Surface Cleaners Are Not Optional at 4000 PSI
A surface cleaner attachment cuts cleaning time on flat concrete by roughly 60 percent compared with the wand alone. The dual rotating jets distribute pressure evenly across a 15 to 24 inch path, which prevents the zebra striping that hand-wanding produces on parking lots and sidewalks. Match the surface cleaner GPM rating to the unit. A 4 GPM unit running a 4 GPM surface cleaner gives full coverage; a 4 GPM unit running a 5 GPM surface cleaner will lose pressure and leave streaks. Add a soft brush attachment for building exteriors and stamped concrete to avoid etching.
